Toyama is a prefecture along the Sea of Japan coast in the the Chubu Region. This prefecture is also the mid-point of Shirakawa-g0/Gokayama and Kanazawa, hence it is best to spend one night here. It is also an important gateway to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.

Shin-Takaoka Station is an interchange railway station on the high-speed Hokuriku Shinkansen line and Jōhana Line in Takaoka, Toyama, Japan. It is also part of the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension from Nagano to Kanazawa.

From the station, Zuiryū-ji Temple (admission: 500 yen) is just a 15-minute walk away.

It is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple in Takaoka, recognized by the Japanese government as a national treasure. The temple was completed circa 1659 to mourn the death of the pioneer of what would become the city of Takaoka, Maeda Toshinaga. His mausoleum is situated approximately one kilometer to the east from the temple.

A rather unique deity worshiped at the temple is Ususama Myo-o, a guardian of the washroom and is accredited powers to purify and prevent diseases.

From Shin-Takaoka Station, it is another 8 minutes of train ride to Toyama City. Here’s some of the things to do in Toyama City:

#1 Experience Tram Car

The “Shiden,” as it is fondly known, is a great way to explore the city. Route 1 connects Minamitoyamaeki-mae and Toyama Sta, Route 2 takes passengers between Minamitoyamaeki-mae and Toyama Daigaku-mae via Toyama Sta, while Route 3 forms a loop line that circuits between Toyama Sta. and Grand Plaza‒mae. Trains arrive every 10 to 20 minutes on these three lines. Passengers can ride in modern, low-floor cars or retro-style cars. 200 yen per ride.

#2 Ikeyada Yasukei Shoten

Familiar to people from all over Japan since the Edo Period, this store provides a place to experience the culture and history of medicine sales in Toyama, as well as the opportunity to purchase medicines and try your hand at making traditional pills using an old wooden apparatus.

Hangontan is a medicine which had been a dominant influence in Edo era. The shop is still pursuing in Oriental medicines field focusing on Japanese traditional medicines.

#3 Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art & Design

The Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art & Design is located in the Fugan Canal Kansui Park, north of Toyama Station. The museum houses a variety of surrealist and abstract works from the 20th century, as well as designer posters and chairs from artists representing Toyama and Japan.

The museum also houses many temporary exhibition such as this gorgeous installation by Emmanuelle Moureaux, architect, designer and artist known for her multi-sensory works characterized by bright colors with three-dimensional effects. The installation is called Colour of Time.

The rooftop garden is also a must-see. Designer Taku Satoh created original playground equipment, including the returning Fuwafuwa Dome, where children and families alike can have fun. The rooftop view of the Tateyama mountain range is absolutely spectacular.
