I had built Jerusalem south of fourteenth street

In his great poem, “Jerusalem”, William Blake declared that “I will not cease from mental fight, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, until we have built Jerusalem, in England’s green and pleasant land.”

[It’s also became a magnificent hymn, in case you haven’t heard it.]

“Jerusalem” is a metaphor for the Holy made manifest on Earth, in the form of a city. Literally, The City of God.

So this version is Greenwich Village.

But I could have moved it anywhere.

The thing is, we’re all looking for Jerusalem, in our own way. A place where we can be our best selves, a place where we can do our best work.

Hopefully we will all find ours.
